I have a nine year old boy with Austism and though some people may say he is "Recovered" the Austism is well and truley still very much "there".

I chose not to immunise my second child as she was born around the time he was being diagnosed..

He had a huge amount of language and was as Neurotypical as you could wish when almost overnight at the 18month mark he lost all language and every other skill he had just about ever learnt.

He became the "changeling" child.

Now what is really bizarre how people are so fantatical about Natural remedies, green/organic everything...what about the huge obsession with mineral and organic makeup.

I have my own range of cosmetics and it is amazing the amount of people who now only want "chemical/preservative free cosmetics" as they dont want this on their skin...YET...they seem to think it is ok to inject nasties into their newborn babies immature immune system and think nothing of it...I am sorry but i just dont get it??

Thats my rant....great job on the blog :)

I had visions of my own son when I read about yours in the souvenir shops. Isn't it funny how, if we truly let them pick what THEY want, it usually ends up being something that they're absolutely in LOVE with? My son proves me "wrong" all the time, by picking out the weirdest things, but loving them all the same! Hope you're having a great vacay!

I have to say that I don't think the autism was the issue.

I think the issue is the mother not planning well. To the general population (those of us without autistic children) she seems like a pampered brat who doesn't believe that her child should have to be part of polite society.

I think that mothers like her do parents like you a huge disservice.

She is completely unlikeable and her unwillingness to accept responsibility for her behavior makes everything else she says just yammering.

We don't know the whole story but...
Autistic child or not, there are lots of families who don't give a hoot about others...just cause the boy was autistic doesn't mean automatically he comes from a perfect family.
I once stayed at a Ronald McDonald house with a family who fit this picture perfectly...they were asked to leave after 2 days.

Our church has solved this issue by building a ministry called bridgebuilders for kids with special needs. They have their own classroom, but those who can are integrated in the regular childrens church as much as possible. A one on one aide stays with them. The ENTIRE class heads to the childrens chapel with the other kids in the beginning. Most can't participate but they seem to enjoy the worship time and most of the time are able to stay for it.
We have a respite night once a month for parents.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this ministry and it made me extra grateful for it when I read this story.

My daughter has SPD and was a terrible eater for years. Mostly cause she just didn't care about food-it just wasn't on her radar. But some of it was texture/smell related. She did OT for years and they worked on this with her, using special brushes and stuff in her mouth or vibrating toothbrushes. What helped the most though was her starting school. Maybe peer pressure was the break through she needed...
My son doesn't have SPD, but is very sensitive to foods-gags and all. We have resorted to bribery at times. I'm sure it's a no no, but for pete's sake, what kid doesn't eat pb & j? That's just weird.
Anyway, he starts kindie in the fall-maybe peer pressure will get to him too.
No advice here, just sympathy. ;)

I just wanted to let you know that I've enjoyed perusing your blog today. My son has SPD/SID,not autism, but there are a lot of similarities.

Wow. Sounds like my son. Every night at supper time, I ask him if he wants chicken nuggets or pizza, because I know those are the only options. Other than that, he eats only bread, cheese, grapes, bananas, oatmeal and strawberries. Oh, and milk and apple juice. That's his diet. You are not alone in this.

My son doesn't have autism, only SPD/SID. Not sure if that matters to you...
